Grand Prix World 1998: The Tyrell Challenge Part 40

We are here: The 2002 Australian GP

Welcome back to The Tyrell Challenge. It's been a while, but finally got some time to write. Hopefully you are aware of what happened during the preseason. For the first time ever, we are starting on a real strong position, take a look ...

We are just a step below Ferrari. There's a big gap behind us. Last year we clawed our way from outside the Top 5 (But still very gud) to winning a championship. This time, we are in the Top 2 from the get go. We CAN win the season opener.

BTW, I hope you saw the big news on the previous chapter. Also, appreciate the $25m+ we have right now. We have the money! That's not an issue. We have the resources to make big signings.

Here's the Setup in the Commercial Department. We want happy sponsors. Happy sponsors means more cash and quicker negotiations.

A very, very successful PreSeason testing program gives us full bars on everything. We will be reloaded by Brazil.

The Development Testing allows us to learn that our handling is 79%, a pretty competitive number to start a season. The Technology is pretty solid.

Here is our Ferrari PU. Nearly perfect power and decent rigidity. The Heat is a bit of a concern though, but that's mildly reduced by the high Weight rating.

While a better Heat rating would help us in Brazil, there are bigger priorities. First is the Power rating, and the Rigidity rating, I want to run the engine at full power for as long as possible.

Up next, making the Soft tire even better. As you should know, the Soft tire can be OP every now and then.

Improving the fuel mixture for a few more HP out of the engine. Not much, but just a bit works.

Clean race cars to start the year. Our Mechanics department did a fantastic job all PreSeason.

Melbourne, the perhaps not as good Australian street course that doesn't feel like a street course. The low Heat rating will be annoying for our engines, but we should be fine today. Dust, as usual, is the bigger issue.

As much "Dust" rating as we could, plus a "Heat" point, in the name of protecting both the Engine and Tires.

Here's the official 2002 Competitors List. We are handed numbers 7 and 8 thanks to Nick. Diniz to number 1 with him to Williams.

2 seconds over Sauber. TWO! We fast, boi!

Oh, we ARE really fast. Matching Jacques Villeneuve. Beating MSC. Everyone else ... quite far away. Sad for them. We have a a clear opponent, and probably no other contenders. It is a straight up fight. Williams annoys me. Look at poor Diniz!!

Stewart ... Jordan ... Arrows ... and far away Minardi. Here's your back marker teams.

The typical one stop, as is usual of our visits Down Under.

I told you we could win the opener. The one stop was clearly the better strat. We smashed the Ferraris, even before MSC blew up. Nick was better at the start, Fisi tried to catch up, but was a few laps too late to close up. It was mostly a Tyrell dominated race.

Takagi and Hakkinen played bumper cars, MSC blew up. Actually both Schumacher bros. hit issues. And Damon Hill was so, sooooo close to finishing too.

That's HOT.

That's F'ing HOT.

And that's tons of cash money too.

They doing too good, pls ban, says Ferrari probably. Also, no Stepney means no one will steal our designs which ... all right. No harm done.

That's our new test driver. We'll make sure Jos is limited to Testing. And we won't get Rory Byrne as Chief Designer.

Keep going for those people, I have a big target.

Damn it Mechanics department.

Upgrades have started. Brake reliability is first. Next could be Gearbox Performance or Suspension Performance.

Auto Gears, for the good of the engine!

Another massive test day at ... I guess Silverstone? Brands Hatch? Which could be our test track?

Of course, we get the "Low Downforce" issue. That means low grip, we will solve that by Spain.

Full Rigidity and improvements on the Heat rating for Spec 03A, coming up.

We'll get those Hard tires ready as well. It is a shame that the Specs we create as a Works team are not legal from a season to another ... though considering we can create OP Tires/Engines quickly ... it is for the best.

More performance improvements!

Sorry, Pedro. I'll fix Car 3 soon enough. Don't worry.

That's it for this chapter. Next time, we go to America, the South. Brazil, the demolition derby, and Argentina, the lost F1 Nation. I expect solid results all the way to Japan. Let's see what we can get and, more importantly, WHO will get them. See you soon.
