Grand Prix World 1998: The Tyrell Challenge Part 13

The Small Advance: The Monaco and Canadian GPs

Welcome back. Last time, we finished in the points. This time, we brought an upgrade ... as probably did the rest of the field. Up next is Monaco and Canada. Last time it wasn't ... that good. This time, we have a car that has PACE. Can we do better, let's see.

So, our fantastic upgrades pack would only be effective for Monaco, since our main opponents in Prost, Jordan and Sauber also brought upgrades for Canada. Williams and Minardi just had engine upgrades, not Chassis upgrades. Finally, McLaren's upgrade package for Canada was, by raw numbers, better than Ferrari's, but McLaren barely improves because they are so good already.

Monaco ... It's Monaco. Long race, so there's a high rate of Driver Error DNFs due to drivers getting tired. Ours probably won't because I'll ensure they are careful, but we could take advantage of other drivers being too aggressive.

Not much improvement. We could have secured a better field position using Softs but a) Hards are better on the race and b) The Race start for player drivers tend to be poo OR I haven't figured out how to make the guys start good. With that in mind, I prioritize track position.

"What the fok is going on here?!?!" I hear you say. Allow me to explain.

First, the power of the 1 stop allowed us to jump the significantly better Arrows. Arrows took themselves out, however, giving Muller a 3 stop. He then DNF'd. Along the same lines, the stop allowed Diniz to overcut the signficantly better Hill, and the defend from him without too much issue. The rest was the game of patience. The first domino was Villeneuve's Gearbox getting stuck in gear. Then the Benettons DNF'd. Collard, in particular, smashed his car on his lonesome. Then the McLarens DNF'd. Double H crashed on his own, elevating Diniz to the podium (!!!) ...

... then I saw the most painful, heartbreaking DNF I've ever seen on this game. Mika Hakkinen was in complete control of this race. Then his Suspension broke. The damage was so bad he had to stop the car. At La Rascasse. On the final lap! He needed to complete 2 more corners to win the race!! That's the first time I see that, but if it ever was going to happen, it was going to happen to McLaren. You can tell I'm a bit pissed off about THEM(!) crashing like that ...

... but what makes me happy. We, the foking Tyrell team, are on the podium! P2! And it is a double points finish! This is not the best possible result, but for our team, it is even better than what I ever expected.

This screen is quite fun, it shows how much everyone scored. Look at Tyrell in the Constructors. We scored nearly as much points as a team as Ferrari did ... yes, We had 2 finishers to Ferrari's 1, but we are TYRELL.

Here starts the AAR, and we made many moneys, bois.

No, you ain't looking for a W. Not yet. Soon.

Yup. Yup, Yup.

... F you media. They don't like us.

The Engineering department is on a roll, they have Max Morale, which makes them more effective. That means MORE Spare parts. This is the first time in the history of my management that the warehouse is full of spare parts.

The Mechanics department, however, is NOT on a roll. They are still on Low Morale, so they are terribly ineffective. The testing and repair of our cars is not as good as we'd like it be because they are not doing a good job. I don't know what gets them happy, maybe more testing, which I'll definitely do, as it seems we have the resources to do so. Besides, I need to spam the Research to improve next year's car. We might not improve current year's car ever again.

That's something else we don't have to worry about. Now the priority is focusing on Cash Sponsors and Supplier Bonuses.

Here, you can see that the Red Bull deal is improving, oh so much. They are paying us even MORE money. They are paying us 3% more cash than the base deal. That sounds like a tiny boost, but any boost is a good boost.

Yes, we are on Canada this go around. I didn't forget it! We shouldn't struggle to much around here. The brakes will be fine, got setup points for that.

STOP THE COUNT!!

I wanted to test the Softs. I don't think the 1 stop is that good around these lands. It went alright. I expect us to go backwards.

Track nearly gets wet twice!

The same thing that happened to The Mika last race happened to The Michael, only it was his gearbox dying on the final lap. And he wasn't in the lead. This was a chance for another double points finish ... or, double finish in general ...

... except for that. I present you extra damage we must fix.

This is because we travelled to the Americas, don't be concerned.

Why are you upset, Diniz? You finished 2nd and 5th in the last two races!

I might regret this in the future, but I'm building a 4th car. This is a totally fresh car. I'll give this car (Car 4) to Diniz, while moving Car 1 to the R&D role This accomplishes 2 things. First, it gives us a safety blanket in case one of our guys decides to do Aero and Suspension developments mid race with another driver. We'll have a fairly fresh race car to use. The second one, Research and Development during Testing gets boosted, which we really need.

In other news, Mugen Honda sent the new, upgraded engine ... that has just 1 extra point in Heat. A better cooling system is nice ... but Power when?!?!

We gained 6 blocks of Research thanks to the 4th car helping us. Setup testing ... doesn't improve too much, but that's optional. I might consider Development testing in the future.

I'm nearly certain we'll get 100% Efficiency on this go around. Our car could have been better, but we didn't have the time to do full efficiency last year. This car had the potential to be a 60% rated car, but our staff being terrible doesn't help.

I ended up fully patching up both cars, so I can leave Car 4 as purely an R&D car. Can't use Car 3 because it has Wear and I think Worn cars aren't as useful as R&D cars.

That's it for this particular chapter. Next up, is the halfway point of the season. We'll take a look at the future of the paddock. We'll also run the French and British GPs ... and see how much damage Car 4 did to our finances.
